![]() She left his body for the pigs to consume and later placed the remains in garbage bags, one of which had been dragged to the pond by a wild animal. Unable to stop the animals, Monica said she shot Haney to put him out of his misery. She claimed to have found Haney in her pigpen, being eaten alive by her pigs. Confronting Monica with this evidence, she recounted a bizarre and disturbing story. Amid the filth, investigators made a horrifying discovery: a human leg in a catchment pond. The search revealed a squalid and chaotic scene, with piles of garbage, rotting food, and industrial waste scattered across the land. Alarmed by this discovery and suspecting foul play, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant on Monica’s property. Security camera footage showed Monica using the card at a Walmart in Grants Pass, Oregon. The Gruesome Discoveryĭetectives soon discovered that Monica had been using Haney’s Oregon Trail Electronics Benefit Transfer (EBT) card after she claimed he had disappeared. They filed a missing person report with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, setting off an investigation that would reveal a gruesome reality. However, Haney’s children knew something was wrong when they discovered his belongings, leather jacket, dog, and tools still on the property. Monica claimed he had quit working for her four months prior and left without explanation. In early January 2014, Haney’s children drove to the farm to check on their father. Though Haney appreciated the solitude of life in the woods, his family grew concerned when they hadn’t heard from him for two months in December 2013. Haney agreed to work for part cash and room on the property while he built a house for Monica. In 2013, Monica hired Robert Haney, a handyman she found through a Craigslist ad. The eerie nature of Monica’s property was apparent to others, with rumors circulating that she had once claimed 17 bodies were buried on the land. What seemed like an idyllic life on the surface, however, would soon become a horrifying story of death, mutilation, and dark mysteries. The first, big fight scene between Grace and the Rev-9 is full of inventive, acrobatic choreography, and Miller and Oscar-nominated editor Julian Clarke were wise to let big sections of choreography play out. Miller, who achieved a far more pleasing balance of action and comedy with the first “ Deadpool” movie, functions here at a single, frenetic speed for two solid hours, and it is exhausting. You know the third iteration of Pixar's Toy Story franchise-the one where Woody and the gang are taken to a daycare facility where Buzz speaks Spanish, Lotso turns out to be a psycho, and all of Andy's toys accept death as they descend into an incinerator? (Which always makes me cry like a baby.) He has been published in Melbourne's The Age, The National Times, New Matilda and Same Same.Even if you're not a huge fan of film remakes, something tells me you're going to dig this. Andy may have grown up and put childish things away, but it's the toys that learn love.Īdrian Phoon is a freelance writer and blogger based in Sydney. The last 10 minutes are a fittingly sentimental end to a trilogy saturated in sentiment, as the toys say goodbye to the past and prepare for the future. No toys die in Toy Story 3 they just move on to the next phase of their lives. Woody's fierce devotion to Andy is touching, but it is the other toys who are the real friends in his life. Toy Story 3 might flirt with life and death, but its main theme is friendship (hence Randy Newman's Oscar-winning theme song, 'You've Got a Friend in Me'). It's all very cute.įor all the darkness lurking in their subtext, the Toy Story films are comedies, not tragedies. A hedgehog named Mr Pricklepants (Dalton) reveals himself to be an aspiring thespian. Barbie (Benson) brings girl power, while a fashion-obsessed Ken (Keaton) himself becomes an accessory. Mr Potato Head (Rickles), continuing the riff on Hispanic translation, turns into Mr Tortilla. Toys are hardier and bouncier than people, so the slapstick routines are fast-paced, zany, and more than enough to entertain children (and, okay, adults).Įver the comic stooge, in Toy Story 3 Buzz gets the laughs when he reverts to Spanish-speaking mode. The toys are some of the brightest, funniest comedians in film today. What's in it for them? In the end, do we really go and watch animated features for nihilism and existential angst?īut Toy Story 3 is by no means all doom and gloom. It's hair-raising and harrowing stuff for an animated feature, but you can never quite tell what the toys find more threatening: death itself or the despair of becoming obsolete.Īt this point, I started to wonder what kids would make of the movie. This fiery pit is equivalent to any vision of Hell confected by Dante and his ilk. ![]() ![]() Instead, they are brought by a garbage truck to a landfill, where they are dragged towards an incinerator. And the endless rotation of children ensures the toys will never become obsolete.īut Sunnyside is not the resort the toys first imagine rather, it's a prison, where the toys are bullies presided over by the despotic Lotso, and the children are rapacious, slobbering, unfeeling monsters.Īn escape sequence follows, in which Woody and the toys give Steve McQueen a run for his money The Toy Story films are deeply nostalgic about the history of American cinema, with old westerns and science-fiction embodied by Woody and Buzz Lightyear (Allen) respectively.īut while the toys manage to leave Sunnyside, they are not free of trouble. Here there are new toys, led by a seemingly loveable bear named Lots-o-Love (Beatty). ![]() Will they end up above, in the attic, or below, in the garbage?īy happy accident, all of the toys, including Woody, end up in the purgatory of a children's day care centre, called Sunnyside. But that leaves the other toys in a predicament. Woody is lucky Andy is still sentimental about his favourite toy and wants to take him along. The toys, led by Woody the sheriff (Hanks), come to terms with the fact that their owner, Andy (Morris), has grown up and, at 17, is about to head off to college. Toy Story 3 may be the most 'grown-up' film in the trilogy. Even when compared to the knowing satire and social commentary of The Simpsons, Toy Story surprises with its depth of feeling and its mature exploration of such themes as life and death, love and rejection, friendship and loneliness. The Toy Story films have always catered to adults in a way most animated features do not. I got the feeling, as the film played, that this was its intended audience: people who had grown up with the Toy Story franchise, and yet had never quite grown up. There was just one infant, who, asleep in her mum's arms, was unaware of the screen in front of her. When I went to see Toy Story 3 the audience consisted almost entirely of adults in their 20s and 30s.
